“Arashiyama” is an especially popular place out of many sightseeing places in Kyoto.
I visited Arashiyama when I went to Kyoto. I could relax while I was walking in the bamboo forest with a peaceful atmosphere. A path surrounded by bamboos has a mystical atmosphere, and is the best place to take great pictures.
You can enjoy even more if you wear a Kimono because it matches with the scenery. The charm of Arashiyama is not only having a beautiful nature, but also having delicious food.
This time, I would like to introduce the charms of “Arashiyama”, one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Kyoto. There are so many places to see in Arashiyama such as Arashiyama Monkey Park and Togetsukyo. Please enjoy the article as tips for your trip!
What Is Arashiyama…?
Arashiyama is a sightseeing spot in Kyoto city, Kyoto prefecture.
I visited on a sunny day in May. I felt a little bit chilly when I was walking in the bamboo forest. When you go to Arashiyama, please make sure to wear clothes that you can easily adjust to the temperature.
Using a train is the best way to go to Arashiyama. I used JR Sanin line and got off at the closest station, “Saga-Arashiyama station”. It is easily accessible from Kyoto station, so if you leave from Kyoto station, I would recommend to take this route.
Here’s the access information for Saga-Arashiyama station.
On the way to go to Arashiyama Monkey Park and Togetsukyo, there are many souvenir shops and restaurants, so you can enjoy walking on the street.
There are many tourists on weekends and holidays in Arashiyama. The time I visited was also on a weekend, so there are so many people that I hardly see in front of me. Especially I saw tourists from abroad.
However, Arashiyama is huge and there are many places to see so I was able to enjoy without being bothered by the crowd.
You want to be careful about when to go to a restaurant for lunch though! It is very busy during lunch hours. There are various food stands such as grilled fish and sweet rice cakes so you can also get food from those places and eat on a riverbank.
Also, you should know that when you go to Arashiyama, you’ll walk a lot!
Especially if you are planning to go to “Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama”, you go up a small mountain, so I recommend you to wear comfortable shoes. I regretted wearing shoes with heels.
The Bamboo Forest At Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama, A Must-Visit Sightseeing Spot
Next, I would like to introduce three must-visit sightseeing spots in Arashiyama.
Bamboo Forest Path
This bamboo forest path is not only famous in Arashiyama but in Kyoto. The path surrounded by many bamboos is very peaceful and has a mystical atmosphere.
You’ll see Ricksha going by and feel like traveling back in an old time. You will relax being surrounded by a great nature. You can take a great picture as well.
“Togetsukyo” is a bride over Katsura river. Togetsukyo has a history of more than one thousand year and is a very old bridge. It is a bridge in Kyoto where there are many historical buildings.
Especially in the season when you can see beautiful cherry blossoms and colored leaves, the scenery is often taken for TV. It is also used in songs and movies, and is a very famous spot!
I visited in May, and the scenery of Togetsukyo with mountains in the back was magnificent.
Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama
The place I especially enjoyed the most in Arashiyama is “Arashiyama Monkey park Iwatayama”. It is on the top of a mountain located across Togetsukyo.
Not only you can see cute monkeys but also you can feed them. Monkeys trying to reach out to us were very cute.
First, I was a little bit afraid of being close to the monkeys, but I got used to it and it was nice to see baby monkeys. Children were enjoying feeding them too.
It is a uphill to go to see the monkeys, but hiking up in the great nature is very enjoyable and you can enjoy a seasonal view. You can also overlook the townscape of Kyoto from this place.
It is hard to climb up, but the view from the top is unforgettable.
Introducing The Cuisines You Can Have In Arashiyama
I would like to introduce delicious food you can have after going sightseeing and getting tired. Arashiyama has not only beautiful nature but also delicious cuisines.
I had lunch at “Kyoto Arashiyama Arashidon”. It has a very calm atmosphere and you can see the scenery of Arashiyama. I had “Maguro(tuna) Yukke Don” here.
There are many kinds of Don meals, so it is hard to choose! The food was delicious so I highly recommend it!
Here’s the access information for “Kyoto Arashiyama Arashidon”.
I had a croquette from “Nakamuraya Sohonten”. The freshly fried croquette was crispy and delicious, and the meat was very juicy!
“Nakamuraya Sohonten” is located near Saga-Arashiyama station, so you can get a croquette and walk around!
Here’s the access information for “Nakamuraya Sohonten”.
Other than these places, there are many restaurants and souvenir shops such as Yatsuhashi store, so you can enjoy walking around. I hope you can find your favorite store.
